- Uyuni is a major railway junction where four lines converge: towards Oruro and La Paz, towards Calama in Chile, towards Potosi, and towards Villazon on the Argentine border.
- The town lies at 3,700 m on the edge of the Altiplano and its airport at 3,665 m, so arrivals are at high altitude from the moment they land.
- Joya Andina Airport only opened in 2011 and has a single 4,000 m asphalt runway; passenger numbers were around 43,000 in 2023.
- Uyuni doubles as a customs and immigration checkpoint for cross-border traffic with Chile and Argentina.
