Aswanで知っておきたいこと
- Aswan International Airport is a domestic airport despite its name, with scheduled flights only to Cairo and Abu Simbel.
- The airport lies 16 km southwest of Aswan and is served by Egyptair, Air Cairo and Nile Air.
- Aswan has a single asphalt runway numbered 17/35 and 3,402 metres long.
- The airport was built in 1956 and upgraded by the Egyptian government in 1992 and again in 1999.
- Egypt's telecom regulator requires a foreign customer to visit a mobile operator branch with an original valid passport and a residency document. The sales agent keeps a colour copy of both.
- A foreign customer may buy a maximum of 5 voice lines and 5 data lines from each mobile operator against the original valid passport. An Egyptian may buy 10 voice lines and 5 data lines.
- Egyptian operators must link SIM card validity to the foreign customer's residency period. The SIM is disconnected one month after the residency ends if no extended document is provided.
- Egypt annulled the customs exemption for an imported mobile phone carried by a passenger from noon on 21 January 2026. The exemption continues to apply to tourists for a period of 90 days.
- Egypt gives a 90 day grace period from the date a mobile phone was activated to regularise the device. Registration of personal phones at customs is cancelled and fees are paid through digital channels.
- Aswan lies just north of the Aswan Dam on the east bank of the Nile at the first cataract. The Nile is nearly 650 m wide above Aswan.
- Aswan receives less than 1 mm of average annual precipitation. Its record high temperature is 51 C, set on 4 July 1918, and its record low is minus 2.4 C.
- The Aswan High Dam is 111 m high and 3,830 m long. Construction began in 1960 and finished in 1970. Twelve generators of 175 MW each give an installed capacity of 2,100 MW.
- Lake Nasser, the reservoir behind the Aswan High Dam, is 500 km long and holds 132 cubic kilometres of water.
- Abu Simbel is on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km southwest of Aswan, or about 300 km by road. Most visitors arrive by road from Aswan.
- Abu Simbel Airport was specially constructed in the 1970s to serve the temple complex and has year round flights to nearby Aswan International Airport.
- Egyptian National Railways was founded in 1854 and runs 5,625 km of standard gauge track. Its line from Cairo runs south along the Nile to Aswan, which the railway reached in 1898.
