- The Laos-China Railway cut the trip from Vientiane to under three hours, where it used to take three days by road; the fast train covers the leg in about 1 hour 31 minutes and the ordinary train in 2 hours 15.
- Daily buses from Vientiane on Route 13 still take 11 to 13 hours, so the train and the road are not remotely comparable journeys.
- Luang Prabang's railway station is 168 km down the line from the Chinese border at Boten, and the line runs mostly in tunnel 75 of them over 47% of its length.
- The airport is about 4 km from the centre of Luang Prabang and is the country's second busiest, with regional flights to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Siem Reap.
