- Ooredoo Qatar: Ooredoo held about 2.6 million active mobile broadband subscriptions at the end of March 2025, the larger of the two networks, out of a national total of 4.7 million in the regulator's quarterly market report.
- Vodafone Qatar: Vodafone Qatar held about 2.1 million active mobile broadband subscriptions at the end of March 2025, according to the regulator's quarterly market report.
Redes antiguas en Catar
- Vodafone Qatar told customers that after 31 December 2025 a phone supporting only 3G can no longer make or receive any call, including to the 999 emergency number. Some phones that show a 4G signal still rely on 3G for voice, so VoLTE support matters.
- Vodafone Qatar's guidance says that once 3G closes, only phones supporting VoLTE can make calls unless they fall back to 2G, and that no fee applies for moving off 3G.
- The regulator ordered Ooredoo and Vodafone to stop using the 2.6 GHz band in FDD mode and move it to TDD by 31 March 2025, in line with Gulf neighbours and to carry 4G and 5G, while granting both operators additional bandwidth.
El 5G en Catar
- Ooredoo announced on 14 May 2018 that it had launched a commercial 5G network on the 3.5 GHz band. The first stage covered an area from The Pearl to Hamad International Airport, including Lagoona, Katara Cultural Village, West Bay, the Corniche and Souq Waqif.
- In May 2022 the minister approved amended coverage obligations in both mobile licences, letting the regulator release more 5G spectrum in the 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands, up to 1,000 MHz per operator on demand, and aiming for 99 percent 5G coverage by 2024 at 100 Mbps or more.
- The regulator put 5G population coverage at 99.0 percent at the end of March 2025. Mobile broadband penetration stood at 146 percent of the population and the average subscription used 11 GB of data a month.
- Under a December 2023 policy the regulator steers businesses and government bodies toward the public 5G networks of Ooredoo and Vodafone, and considers spectrum for a private 5G network only as an exceptional case.
Notas sobre la red en Catar
- The regulator's licence register names only Ooredoo and Vodafone as mobile licensees. Qatar National Broadband Network holds a passive fixed licence, and the other licensees listed hold VSAT or satellite licences.
- Postpaid lines made up 28 percent of mobile subscriptions at the end of March 2025, so most mobile users in Qatar are on prepaid.
- The regulator's 2023 audit of mobile service quality, run from September to December 2023, tested both operators on all main and secondary roads, on popular off-road routes and at 100 indoor locations, including places visited in the camping and fishing seasons.
- The regulator extended temporary extra spectrum in the 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands for both operators until 31 May 2023, to add 2G, 3G and 4G capacity ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
