Bon à savoir sur Suva
- Nausori International Airport is 23 km from Suva on the southeastern side of Viti Levu, roughly a 45 minute drive.
- The airfield was first built by United States Navy Seabees in 1942.
- A 60 million dollar project completed in 2021 extended and widened the runway to 2,148 metres.
- Despite International in its name, passengers travelling beyond Fiji's near neighbours have to transit through Nadi.
- Cash is not accepted on Fiji public buses. Since 1 October 2017 fares are paid electronically through eTransport, a government regulated fare payment system, using a card preloaded with value.
- Disposable eTransport cards need no registration and are aimed at visitors and tourists coming to Fiji. They come in 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar denominations.
- A permanent eTransport card is free but needs one valid ID at first registration, and a passport is on the accepted list. Cards are issued at Vodafone and Valuefone outlets.
- The eTransport Fiji app needs a phone running Android 9 or higher with NFC enabled, because it reads and tops up the physical card by tapping it against the handset.
- Vodafone Fiji sells its tourist SIM at the Vodafone Nadi Airport outlet, not at Nausori. The accepted identification for registration is a valid physical passport.
- Vodafone Fiji eSIM activations are all done in person at retail outlets and authorised partners. You need an eSIM capable device and a valid ID, and extra eSIM profiles cost 4.70 dollars each.
- Vodafone Fiji switched on 5G from 15 September 2025. The first phase covers the town and city boundaries of Suva, Nadi, Lautoka and Denarau.
- Walesi runs free public wifi hotspots under the Digital Fiji programme, giving 60 minutes of free access each day. The Suva locations named are My Suva Park and Sukuna Park.
- The Telecommunications Authority of Fiji administers a Universal Service Scheme delivering satellite based managed wifi. Phase One covers 126 sites from the first week of January 2026, run by Digicel Fiji and Telecom Fiji.
- Southern Cross lists a cable landing station at Suva with operator code SUV, and a second Fiji access point at Savusavu. Suva is therefore a direct landing point on the network, not a spur off another country.
- Southern Cross NEXT links data centres in Sydney, Los Angeles and Auckland with connections to Fiji, Tokelau and Kiribati, which is what gives Suva its low latency path to Australia and the United States.
- Fiji time is UTC plus 12, IANA zone Pacific/Fiji. Daylight saving would move it to UTC plus 13, but Fiji decides year by year and none has been observed since the 2020 to 2021 season.
- Nadi International Airport handles about 97 percent of international visitors to Fiji and lies 192 km northwest of Suva, so almost every arrival starts with a long transfer across Viti Levu.
- Viti Levu, the island holding both Suva and Nadi, measures 146 km long by 106 km wide, and a single major road runs around its perimeter.
- Buses connect Suva with the rest of Viti Levu by the Kings, Queens or Princes highways, all of which start in the city.
- Suva sits on a hilly peninsula between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour and averages 3,000 mm of rain a year with no true dry season. Much of Fiji's international shipping docks at Kings Wharf.
- Nausori's scheduled airlines are Fiji Link, Northern Air and Nauru Airlines, with multiple daily domestic connections to Nadi.
