Bon à savoir sur Taichung
- Taichung's only metro line, the Green line, is entirely elevated and driverless, running 16.5 km between Beitun and Wuri - so there is no underground section to lose signal in.
- The metro opened only on 25 April 2021, so Taichung is a very recent rapid-transit city compared with Taipei and Kaohsiung.
- Taichung's airport was only redesignated as an international airport on 3 January 2017 and its route network is correspondingly limited.
- Taiwan's iTaiwan free public wifi has required no registration since 1 July 2020, for local residents and foreign visitors alike, at more than 5,000 hotspots in government offices, tourist attractions and transport stations.
- Taichung's city wifi uses the SSID iTaichung. You connect, are redirected to a terms of use page, agree to it and then browse. No account, local phone number or passport is involved.
- iTaichung indoor hotspots run only during the host office's opening hours, while outdoor hotspots run 24 hours. Bandwidth is shared, with about 8 Mbps quoted as the basic rate.
- A foreigner buying a Taiwanese prepaid SIM must show two original documents: a foreign passport as primary ID, plus a secondary ID such as a visa, entry or exit permit, NHI card or a Taiwan driving licence.
- Taiwan Mobile runs a prepaid tourist SIM counter at Taichung International Airport from 04:30 to 23:00, one of five airport counters it lists in Taiwan.
- Chunghwa Telecom staffs a counter on 1F of Taichung airport's international departure hall from 10:00 to 22:00, selling prepaid cards and handling roaming, phone cards and bill payment.
- Taichung Metro sells single journey tickets and accepts EasyCard, iPASS, icash 2.0 and Easy Wallet. Credit cards are not listed among the accepted payment methods.
- Taichung Metro sells a one day pass at NT$120, a 24 hour pass at NT$150 and a 48 hour pass at NT$250, alongside the TPASS monthly pass.
- Taichung's free first 10 km bus benefit is restricted to registered Taichung residents, their foreign spouses, local students and permanent residents with a Taichung address. A visitor pays the ordinary fare.
- Airport buses leave from B1 of Taichung's international terminal, which has seven platforms. Route 156 runs direct to HSR Taichung Station and routes 302, 333, 500 and 357 serve Taichung Station.
- From Taichung airport, routes 302, 333 and 555 reach the metro Green line at Taichung City Hall station, and route 555 also calls at Wenhua Senior High School station on the same line.
- Taichung International Airport operates from 06:00 to 23:00, with a curfew from 23:00 to 07:00. It has one runway, 3,659 m long and 61 m wide, and two terminal buildings.
- Taichung airport keeps an internet zone with public computers near gates 5 and 6 on 3F of the international terminal.
