Why full bars can mean nothing loads

Bars measure the radio link to a tower. They say nothing about whether that tower's operator has authorised a data session for your profile. Automatic network selection picks the strongest signal, which is often a host we do not have an agreement with in that country. The phone registers, shows full bars, and then every request times out.

Why picking the network manually fixes it

Because you are overriding the phone's only criterion, which is signal strength, with the criterion that actually matters, which is whether that operator passes our traffic. The partner networks for each country are listed on that country's page. Picking one by name is a thirty second change and it clears most of these.

1. Turn off automatic network selection
2. Wait for the scan and pick a partner network named on your country page
3. If nothing loads within a minute, pick the second one listed
4. Turn automatic selection back on when you leave the country

When it is not the network at all

Three other causes look identical from the outside and none of them is fixed by switching networks.

• A VPN that connected before the data session did. Turn it off, load a page, turn it back on.
• A captive portal from an airport wifi network the phone is still holding. Forget that wifi network.
• A private DNS setting that cannot resolve on this carrier. Set private DNS to automatic and retry.

What we do automatically and what needs you

We hold 157 upstream networks and prefer the ones we have agreements with when the phone gives us the choice. Manual selection overrides us, which is the point, so remember to turn automatic selection back on when you change country or the phone will keep hunting for a network that is not there.

The numbers, and where they came from

We publish a median measured speed for every destination, built from 75,333 samples across 145 countries. If pages load at all, compare what you are getting against your country page median. In 5 destinations there is exactly one upstream network, so manual selection has nothing to choose between and the answer is a refund rather than a fix.

How to prove which side is broken in thirty seconds

Before changing anything, find out whether the problem is the data session or the thing you are opening. Two checks settle it.

• Open a plain, unencrypted site you have never visited. A cached page can load with no working connection and fool you.
• Run a speed test rather than reloading an app. Apps retry silently and tell you nothing about why.
• If the speed test itself will not start, the data session is down and the network selection steps above are the fix.
• If the speed test runs and one app does not, the app or its region is the problem, not the eSIM.
